Making Fire Cider

Fire cider is one of the most effective cold and flu remedies you can make at home. Full of hot, pungent herbs, it will certainly clear you out rather quickly. During the winter season it is certainly something that should be part of your winter care kit. It is full of herbs designed to blow your head of, it's not for the faint of heart, but each herb in fire cider has a strong and powerful action. It is a folk remedy so there are many different variations, no two are alike but for the most part there are some common, agreed upon ingredients. My recipe is based on the popular Rosemary Gladstar version.

My recipe has:

Apple Cider Vinegar
Cayenne Pepper (warming stimulant, immune supporter)
Garlic (Antibacterial, antiseptic, antimicrobial)
Ginger (Warming stimulant, antiseptic)
Chilli (Warming stimulant, fights sinus congestion)
Onion (Anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antimicrobial)
Tumeric (Anti-inflammatory, Anti-bacterial, Anti-oxidant, Anti-microbial)
Elder Berries (Diaphoretic, Anti-Catarrhal, Anti-Inflammatory, Diuretic)
Rosehips (High in Vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, C & K, used for colds)
Lemon (Astringent, Immune Booster, Vitamin C, Dexotifies the liver)
Thyme (Antiseptic, antispasmodic, tonic and carminative)

From this, you can add variations like Elder Berries or Rosehips for their fantastic properties, thyme for it's excellent disinfectant qualities and lemon for a citrus boost and also because lemon is great for sore throats. You can drink it straight if you're brave but there are other ways to have fire cider.

The recommended dose is 1 - 2 tablespoon every three hours until symptoms subside. It wouldn't hurt to keep it up for a couple of days after the symptoms disappear in order to really kill the bacteria and germs.

While winter may have now finished, it is still a great remedy for clearing out those flemmy throats and runny noses that suffer the effects of hay fever during the spring. I’ll be stocking some of my own creation ‘Fiery Flu Tonic’ soon in the store.

There is also a bit of controversy happening with fire cider - it's a complicated story involving trademarking, hopefully the result comes out on the side of the herbalists - so we all can sell fire cider as fire cider.
